Services & Consultation

Research Laboratory & Expertise

The Clinical & Translational Research Center (CTRC) offers extensive support for inpatient and outpatient adult, pediatric, and neonatal subjects, including full research laboratory support.

Due to CTSA partial financing of the CTRC, services are charged at a portion of the actual cost.

Below are the current services available in the CTRC Core Laboratory effective September 1, 2008. The services outlined are not all-inclusive, but are provided only as a brief overview.

Core Lab processing is charged according to the price of the assay plus a small labor fee. For quotes contact the Core Lab at 617-636-6461.

In general, the research laboratory offers specimen processing and storage, ELISA-based and RIA-based assays, trace element testing by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, HPLC separation assays, and DNA analyses.

Specific services include, but are not limited to:

Specimen Processing

  • Processing whole blood and urine
  • Storage: -80 and –20 freezers
  • Shipping (with or without dry ice)

    ELISA-based Assays

The Core Lab is capable of running almost any commercial ELISA, EIA or RIA assay kit. Some of the more common kits we test are:

  • Catecholamines
  • CRP
  • Testosterone
  • Salivary and urine cortisol

    Luminex

The new Luminex technology allows the testing of up to 42 different analytes in a single well of a 96 well plate. This methodology uses only 25 mL of sample per well. The cost of testing is only a fraction of what it would cost if the analytes were individually tested using ELISA methods.

  • Cytokines (human, mouse or rat)
  • Growth Factor Panels
  • Biomarker Panels
  • Cardiac Panels
  • Cell Signaling Panels
  • Endocrine Panels
  • Gut hormone Panels
  • Bone Metabolism Panels

    HPLC Separation Assays

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C
  • Uric Acid
  • Thiamine
  • MDA

    Heavy Metals

  • Selenium
  • Zinc

    RIA-based Assays

  • Insulin
  • Vitamin D

    Micronutrient Assays

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin E

    The CTRC also has:

  • Ten inpatient beds;
  • Eight outpatient exam rooms;
  • Two phlebotomy chairs; and
  • Inpatient and Outpatient Resources on Pratt 6, offering per diem inpatient and outpatient units, outpatient rooms, waiting areas, metabolic kitchen, computer laboratory, Core Laboratory annex, specimen processing room, administrative office.
