Tufts CTSI’s multidisciplinary approach facilitates the development of translational and clinical research proposals and protocols. In this highly iterative process, there is continual interaction between researchers and our team. Staff with expertise in biostatistics, epidemiology, grant editing and data management provide a broad range of high quality scientific services through the Research Design Center (RDC).
Overview
The RDC, formerly known as the Design and Data Resource Center (DDRC), is a resource open to all Tufts CTSI investigators who are seeking intramural or extramural funding or developing research protocols. Its professionals provide assistance primarily with the creation and development of valid and reliable study designs for the purposes of research protocols or grant applications.
The RDC’s staff collaborates with investigators on the development of a rigorous design to address the proposed research questions. We also provide needed guidance in all aspects of study development:
- Framing of the research questions
- Selection of an appropriate study design
- Development of study logistical plans
- Selection of the proper statistical analyses appropriate to the research aims
- Creation of statistical analysis plans
- Calculation of sample size and/or power
- Evaluation of threats to study validity
- Assistance with human protection issues
- Creation of data capture and storage procedures
The RDC study design team provides input to investigators concerning other useful proposal and protocol development resources available throughout Tufts CTSI’s organizational partners. We serve as a portal to experts in methods from fields including:
- Genetics and genomics
- Evidence-based medicine
- Predictive medicine; and
- Therapeutics development and implementation
We also provide assistance to investigators responding to peer-reviewer comments of submitted manuscripts, conduct analysis of pilot or preliminary data leading to a grant submission, and offer support to animal studies, as well.
Investigators requesting RDC assistance should do so well in advance of grant or publication deadlines. While the RDC strives to accommodate deadlines, it generally takes weeks, and in some cases, months to conduct adequate analysis and provide thorough assistance. Once a request is accepted, a service agreement will be developed to assure mutual responsibilities are outlined.
