The Tufts CTSI encourages the development of new translational research projects and programs through CTSI Pilot Studies grants, which provide researchers with critical planning and preliminary study support.
In 2009 thirty-six applications were received for Planning Grants and Catalyst Awards. We are very pleased to announce the recipients of the 2009 CTSI Pilot Studies awards.
The Pilot Studies Program will stimulate three elements:
- Development of new research approaches or the application of existing approaches in novel ways across the translational spectrum;
- Translation and movement of research discoveries from bench to bedside to practice to policy and back across each step; and/or
- Acquisition of sufficient preliminary data to secure extramural funding for a translational research project.
This program will seek to bring together new multidisciplinary teams by providing seed money for the development of new collaborations (“Planning Grants”) or for pursuit of more mature ideas (“Catalyst Awards”). The goal of the program is to position investigators to successfully compete for new extramural funding.
Planning Grants are awarded to multidisciplinary research teams of at least two investigators composed of basic, clinical, and/or applied sciences, and provide an early mechanism through which a minimum of two scientists can develop partnerships and initial hypotheses or study questions.
Planning Grants are intended as small awards to encourage new collaborative efforts and development of new hypotheses or method and begin collaborative ventures and hypothesis refinement. Funding will be for a maximum of one year allowing the project to be eligible for a Catalyst Award or other translational pilot programs.
Catalyst Awards are for multidisciplinary research teams of at least two investigators, representing the basic, clinical, and/or applied sciences.
Community-based participatory research grants (CBPR) with dual leadership shared between a Tufts faculty member and practice/practice-based network are acceptable. Collaborators must have developed a preliminary hypothesis underlying the research, and have a defined plan for seeking extramural funding (R01 awards, SBIR awards with industry collaborators, CBPR, or equivalent. Funding can be used for salaries, and support staff (research assistants and/or technicians) honoraria, clinical support, laboratory research, supplies, or for help with biostatistics and biomedical informatics. The objective is to develop preliminary results that point to a full project allowing for an application for extramural funding (e.g., R01, P series, SBIR with industry collaboration, CBPR, or equivalent).
